We at TLR are big readers, and while we have a special place in our hearts for the individual poem, short story, or essay, we also love a good book-length work. This summer, we’ve decided to create TLR Recommends: a space in which we can share the best of what we’re reading.
On a quarterly basis, Joe, Kelly, and Yi Shun will bring you short reviews on new and forthcoming titles that we love and that we think you’ll love, too. No scathing indictments, no heavy-handed think pieces, no reviews written by anybody but our editors, and no agenda—just our honest recommendations of books worth reading.
Some of the titles we review are published by TLR contributors. Some are titles we’ve picked up at our local bookstores. Some books came to us in the form of pre-publication galleys from independent presses or from authors themselves. What all the books have in common is we love them and think they’re worth your time and attention.
If you’re an author, publisher, or publicist, you are welcome to send electronic galleys of a new (published within the past 6 months) or forthcoming book of poetry, creative nonfiction, or fiction for us to read. There’s no need to query—just direct your galley to the appropriate editor via email (don’t use our Submittable channels for galleys, please. Email’s fine!). Press kits with publication info are helpful and are especially welcome. We aren’t looking for self-published titles at this time. Please be aware of the fact that we can’t follow up on every galley submitted to us, but we’ll let you know if we plan to review your book.
